De 3 October Vereeniging organiseert sinds 1886 het Leidens Ontzet. We vieren en herdenken de bevrijding van de Spanjaarden in 1574.

Monument voor Leidens Ontzet, vervaardigd door Johan Coenraad Altorf en onthuld op 3 oktober 1924 door koningin Wilhelmina. Op de dag van het ontzet vond een dienst plaats in de Pieterskerk. Sindsdien wordt elk jaar op 3 oktober in die kerk een herdenkingsdienst gehouden.
